Hulu Dropping Free Streaming Option

Hulu is a movie streaming application that is providing people with free movie and tv show watching experience for a long time now. Since last few months, it has been planning to make Hulu a paid service.

Hulu has now started informing users about their new upgrades. They have restricted the view of tv shows to its latest 5 episodes that feature on the app. Soon the app will be premium. You need to pay Hulu a month’s subscription to watch all episodes and movies.

The Vice President of the company, Ben smith said: “As we have continued to enhance that offering with new originals, exclusive acquisitions, and movies, the free service became very limited and no longer aligned with the Hulu experience or content strategy.”

Hulu’s new service coincides with Yahoo as partners. Later this year Yahoo is planning to launch its new movie and tv streaming application “Yahoo View”. Again, it would be providing you with free movie and tv shows experience. Yahoo announced it would be allowing users to watch last 5 episodes of tv shows from ABC, Fox and NBC eight days after they have been released on the television.

The good thing is that it is also giving leverage to blogging site Tumblr to provide users with GIFs and photos of the tv shows and movies.

In fact, Yahoo had a movie streaming service known as “Yahoo Screen”. Due to some internal reason Yahoo had to shut the app early this year. And now with a partnership, Yahoo is getting a kick start for a new position in the digital market.

In the last week, Time Warner declared that they would be taking 10% share from Hulu for providing shows from the Cartoon Network, TBS, AND TNT.

All said and done, Hulu is certainly lagging behind Amazon and NetFlix in the case of its users. Hulu in 2016 was able to attract 67 million users, whereas Amazon had an estimate of 73.5 million and NetFlix as 126 million users. Indeed, Hulu has to really work hard to achieve these target with paid services now.
